Spike Lee Says I’m a Dream Killer

Spike Lee made an appearance at Wake Forest University last week and among his comments was the following:

Quite often, young people allow themselves to be influenced too heavily by their parents, and wind up having life choices made for them, Lee said.

“Parents kill more dreams than anybody,” he said.

One of my oldest and closest friends has for years been called the "funsucker" by his wife and kids.  Personally I just see him as a proponent of reality-based parenting, but of course I've been accused of being a funsucker too so what do I know?

Now I can add "dream killer" to my resume.

ACC Hoops at the Halfway Point

Dan Collins uses a little blog space to look at how Wake Forest is doing at the halfway point of the ACC conference schedule.  His tool to measure them is the ACC Stats page and I agree with his assessment:

This is not a pretty team. Teams that miss a bunch of shots and turn the ball over rarely look good, at least not until the game is over.

But defense and rebounding statistics reveal effort. And it’s hard to argue that any team in the ACC has given more effort so far this season than Wake Forest.

Dan doesn't dig into the other ACC teams, but after watching UNC the last couple of weeks I'll offer one observation that I think the stats clearly back up: right now the young Tarheels can't guard their own shadows.  That's not really shocking given their relative youth (most young college players don't defend well), but they better learn how to defend soon or it won't just be a long season, it will be a long couple of seasons.

For You Wake Hoops Fans

Remember how bad you felt when Wake lost to William & Mary?  Well, this might help you feel a little better.  The current RPI rankings have William & Mary at #2 in the country behind only West Virginia. Wake is ranked 29 and Duke, at #3 is the only ACC team with a higher RPI.

As a George Mason alum I'm intrigued that the CAA has three teams in the top 40: William & Mary at #2, Virginia Commonwealth at #14 and Old Dominion at #39.  The ACC only has Duke and Wake in the top 40, but it has NC (49), Clemson (50) and Florida State (51) just below.  Sadly my alma mater, the boys who were seconds away from beating Villanova (15) at the beginning of the year and played Georgia Tech (65) tough, yet managed to recently lose to Radford (89) by 27 points, is ranked #131.

The Wake Forest Connection to the David Letterman Affair

Local blogger Ken Ashford writes that one of the women who had a sexual relationship with David Letterman is a graduate of Wake Forest:

UPDATE:  One of the female employees Letterman had a sexual affair with was named Stephanie Burkitt.  She's a New Hampshire native and a Wake Forest graduate (she's following me!).  That relationship ended in 2003, before David's child was born (and before David married the child's mother).  Burkitt later became involved with the Halderman, who apparently accessed Burkitt's diary, and got the goods on Letterman.  Burkitt is apparently "mortified" that Halderman would have done something like that.

West Forsyth Gym the Backdrop for a Make-a-Wish Piece on ESPN

ESPN has been running a series of sports related Make-a-Wish pieces and last night's piece featured Lewisville native Chris Paul hanging out with a kid who had a fight with cancer (luckily it's now in remission) and the two of them shot hoops at Paul's alma mater, West Forsyth HS, which also happens to be my kids' school.  It's a nice piece (see video below) and helps boost the respect that Paul continues to earn:

Reader Mail re. Medical Facilities in Clemmons

Got this anonymous email today and thought I'd share to see if anyone's heard about this:

On Monday, April 6, an unnamed Urgent Care provider has announced its intentions to the open a new immediate care clinic in Clemmons, NC, located close to the proposed Novant Hospital location, pending state and local approvals. The clinic will feature the same state-of-the-art technology and equipment including electronic medical kiosks, digital radiology and flat screen televisions. Medical care services will range from school and sports physicals, lab work, x-rays, prescriptions, vaccinations and walk-in medical and urgent.

Last Month, Wake Forest University Medical Center’s physicians group announced plans to build another new $2 million to $3 million multispecialty clinic in Clemmons.

My anonymous emailer's address is "saynotonovant" at a free email service provider, and what I gather is that he (or she) thinks that Novant's proposed hospital will lead to more facilities being built in the area.  I'm also supposing that he thinks one of those facilities is being built by WFU which is also building a hospital in nearby Advance.  If all this is true we'll soon have a veritable health care mecca in Clemmons.

ACC Sucking Wind

Seven ACC teams made the big dance and four didn't make it past the first round, most notably Wake Forest being thumped by Cleveland State.  If you go buy tournament results you'd have to say that so far the vaunted depth and parity of the ACC was vastly overrated.  Personally I think a better gauge is the overall record of the conference's teams versus non-conference opponents during the season, but since so much emphasis is put on the tournament you can't totally discount the idea that the ACC teams are second-class citizens in March.  My reply is this: does anyone really believe that, despite winning the ACC tournament, Duke is a better team than North Carolina?

As for Wake I want to say only one thing: one of the reasons they were beaten so handily was that they couldn't stop two players from having all-world games against them.  Although Wake's defense is much improved this season they seemed to have a habit of letting players "go off" on them.  Hopefully for next season they'll find someone that they can designate to lock down on other teams' go-to players much like their opponents did to Jeff Teague at the end of this season and during the tournament.

Duke Walks All Over Wake

Before I get started let me just say this: I don't think a missed walking call or five in favor of Duke is why they won the game against Wake last night.  Gerald Henderson could have been shooting a beach ball at a donut and he would have made it.  He was absolutely on fire last night.  Sure, there was a stretch where he had like seven straight dunks with nary a Wake defender within 10 feet of him, but he also hit jump shots with guys inside his shorts so let's give him some credit.  Same goes for Scheyer.

All that said I have to ask this, "What in the sam hell were those refs looking at last night?"  There were several occassions when Duke players shuffled their feet and there was no call.  Wake probably had a couple too, but there were some blatant travels by the Dookies and none were called.  Here's the worst:

Another Reason to Set Up Online Tracking for Your Name

In today's connected world one thing all of us should do is track our identities online.  You might think, "Well, I don't blog, or use Facebook or any of those other web things so it's really not worth my while" but I'll have to disagree with you and I have a real life story to help explain why.

This morning I was checking my Google Alert feeds.  I have several set up for various interests, like "winston-salem arts" or "forsyth county business" and I also have alerts set up for tracking blog searches for similar terms.  This morning I came across a listing for a blog that sent chills down my spine.  Essentially it threatened some people at a local institution with severe physical harm and it did so by naming them specifically and providing their home addresses so I thought it needed to be taken seriously.  I'm not going to go into any more detail than that because I don't want to give the threatened folks any more angst than they have already experienced.  I called security at the institution to give them a heads up and they gave me an email address to send them the URL of the page containing the threats.  I heard back from them about an hour later and they said that the page had been found by someone else last night and that the threatened parties had been alerted.  I can't tell you how relieved that made me feel.

But here's the point.  The people who were threatened could have found the same information if they had an alert set up for their name because their names were used specifically on the threatening page.  Even if the threat ends up being a false alarm they will have known about it even if someone else hadn't warned them.  Of course this only happens if you're threatened by name online, but there are other practical reasons to set up an alert system:
  • Someone might be saying nasty things about you on a message board.
  • Someone with your name might be doing nefarious things, and if they are you want to be aware of it so you can let people know it's not you.
  • Documents that you might have thought were private somehow end up online.  At least you'll know about it and maybe you can take action to have them taken down.
  • A friend posts pictures that have you in them and tag them with your name when they upload them. You may not have your friend remove the pictures but if you're uncomfortable with your name being attached to them you can ask them to remove the tags.

I think you get the point.  Anyway, if you want to set up an early warning sytem for yourself it's easy and free to do with Google.  Simply visit the Google Alerts page and follow the easy prompts to set up the alert.  You can set up the alerts to be emailed to you as they happen, which means any time your name appears online you'll get an email, or you can have all the alerts compiled and sent to you once a day or once a week.  Here's a helpful tip: use your full name in quotation marks, like "jane smith", because if you don't you'll get an alert for everyone with your first name and everyone with your last name.  By putting both names in quotes you can cut down significantly on the number of "false positive" alerts you'll get.

One last thing: it's kind of fun finding other people who have the same name as you.  I've found that there's a high school baseball player in Oklahoma with my name (seems he's pretty good too), and there's someone else here in North Carolina with my name.  I'm going to have to track him down some day.

Wake-State Lore

I'm really, really enjoying Dan Collins' blog "My Take on Wake."  Today I read his post on the history of the Wake Forest-NC State basketball rivalry and truly enjoyed the perspective it provided.  Go give it a read.

By the way, if the folks at the Journal decide to cut Collins loose in a future layoff then they surely should be drawn and quartered.  They've lost enough talent already; they need to keep this dude around.
