DonateNowButton

Hunger Fact of the Day:

22.8% of children living in Northwest North Carolina are food-insecure (one in every four children). Nationwide, one in every six children lives in a food-insecure household.

Pit Stops for Hope. I met Ray Wright from Pit Stops for Hope at a Second Harvest Food Bank dinner a couple of years ago and have been amazed at what he and his organization have done to invest in children through their aid to food banks and teachers.

Activity Day 30: Hit the tennis courts for about 75 minutes of pretty good hitting with my buddy Tyler. Felt good to work the kinks out, and with the humidity, I think I lost approximately 250 pounds of water weight.

Miles walked/run: 5.75 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 210.58. I’m still about 6 miles behind the pace I need to make my goal.

What Percentage of North Carolinians are Food Insecure?

Hunger Fact of the Day: During my long walk two days ago it occurred to me that these posts have to be the most boring things ever written and I seriously doubt anyone is reading them, so I thought I’d add an element called Hunger Fact of the Day in an effort to help explain why stunts like this walk are necessary to raise money to help Second Harvest feed the hungry. Here’s the first one, which I found at Second Harvest’s website:

16.5% of the population in North Carolina is food insecure (more than 1.6 million residents). North Carolina ranks 5th worst among the states for food insecurity.

Activity Day 29: Tuesday, the day after Memorial Day and the first day back in the office after a week away, involved a lot of sitting, typing and talking. I did get to walk the dog, but other than that there wasn’t a whole lot of activity so I’ve fallen back to about 6 miles behind pace. My plan is to end the week five miles ahead of pace so I’m gonna be hoofin’ it the next few days.

Miles walked/run: 2.75 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 216.33. I’m still about 6 miles behind the pace I need to make my goal.

Back in the Saddle

Activity Day 28: After sleeping in three different hotels last week it was nice to sleep in my own bed Sunday night and get caught up around the house on Memorial Day yesterday. I was also able to go for a good, long walk from our house up through the Hanestown, Ardmore and Knollwood Manor neighborhoods. I decided to give some “active” khaki shorts I bought this spring a try to see how they might work when we go hiking in Utah in two weeks, and as you can see from the pics below it will probably be a good idea for me NOT to use them unless I’m comfortable with everyone thinking I’m incontinent.

Miles walked/run: 8.27 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 219.08. I’m still about 3.2 miles behind the pace I need to make my goal, but that means I made up about half of the deficit I built up last week.

Three Days in Pinehurst Doing the Rotary Thing

Activity Days 25-27: On Friday Celeste and I drove from Charlotte to Pinehurst for the Rotary District 7690 Conference. As expected I fell behind my pace as a result, but it was a great 3 days and our first chance to spend time in Pinehurst.

Miles walked/run: 2.83, 4.43, 2.37 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 227.35. These three days put me about 6 miles behind schedule, but I think I’ll make them up this week.

A Night at the Knights

Activity Day 24: Spent most of the day in the office catching up on stuff after spending the first half of the week in Raleigh, then Celeste and I dashed down to Charlotte to take in a Charlotte Knights with the folks from Loebsack & Brownlee. We had a blast and I have to say that watching AAA is about like watching a Major League game without the massive stadium and crowds.

Miles walked/run: 3.54 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 236.98.

Three Days in Raleigh

Activity Days 21-23: Work took me to Raleigh the first half of the week (May 21-23) for an education conference the first two days and then a visit to the legislature on Wednesday. I’ve pasted the FitBit screenshots from all three days below. Didn’t make my 5.4 miles-per-day goal any of these days, but I did better than I thought I would. Some pics from the conference and legislative visits are at the bottom of the post.

Miles walked/run: 4.13, 4.11, 4.44 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 240.52. I’m still slightly ahead of schedule. After the next few days, though, I won’t be so lucky.

Terrible Tennis and Neighborhood Delivery

Activity Day 20: Played my first competitive singles match, as in a league match, for the first time in forever and it didn’t go well. I was supposed to play doubles, but we had a no-show so singles it was. It was hot as blazes and I stunk the place up, so it’s a match I’d prefer to forget. Then in the evening my better half and I delivered the neighborhood newsletter, which kicked in a couple of miles. All in all it was a good exercise day even if the tennis sucked.

Miles walked/run: 7.93 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 253.2. I’m ahead of schedule, but that’s a good thing because the next week features a lot of travel that will likely put a serious ding in my daily mileage.

Walking Winston

Activity Day 19: Went for a nice long walk around Winston-Salem and it reminded me that cities look different when you walk them versus when you drive through them. The miles logged today got me through the 100-mile threshold since the start of the challenge on May 1.

Miles walked/run: 9.41 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Screenshot_20180520-120350_2

Miles remaining in challenge: 261.13. As I mentioned before, these miles get me past the 100-mile threshold for the challenge. Looking forward to the next 100!

Walking in Place

Activity Day 18: Didn’t feel like swimming for my miles, so given the day’s monsoons I decided a session on the treadmill would be the best approach to get in the miles. Boring? You bet, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Miles walked/run: 5.03 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Smacking Balls

Day 9 of Virtual Walk Around the Triad to Benefit Second Harvest

Activity Day 9: Spent 90 minutes at Taylor Tennis Center hitting with my buddy Tyler. Learned that it’s a very good thing I don’t get paid to play because I’d have to return the money.

Miles walked/run: 6.13 miles. Here’s the screenshot from my FitBit:

Miles remaining in challenge: 317.77. Continued making up ground from the shortages of Week 1.
