Ben Hwang posted the best explanation I've seen about Time Warner's new pricing scheme for internet data usage. His analogy using water, hose and bucket really helps put the issue in perspective and goes a long way towards tearing down some of Time Warner's arguments for the pricing.

Time Warner Lit a Fire
Well my post about the Time Warner's move to charge variable rates for high speed internet garnered more comments in a few minutes than I ever typically get on any post. Lots of good points were made and questions asked in those comments, the most obvious of which is how customers are supposed to tell how much data they're pushing through Time Warner's "tubes". Ben offers some excellent tips for how to track your internet usage here. I'm sure there will be much more on this story to follow.
Wilbur Replacing Weather at WXII
Did you know that WXII has a 24 hour weather channel? If you did I guess you didn't have much company because WXII has decided to replace their weather programming on the channel with 24 hours of really old TV shows like Mr. Ed and movies that you've probably never heard of. From the story:
Starting June 1, WXII will be replacing its Weather Plus sub-channel with This TV, a free movie and classic television channel offered by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the station announced Monday…
This TV programming includes 4,000 film and 10,000 television series episodes in agreement with six distinct studio libraries: Cannon, United Artists, Polygram Filmed Entertainment, Orion, Samuel Goldwyn Films and MGM.
Classic television shows such as Patty Duke and Mr. Ed, as well as feature-length movies, will be offered 24 hours per day.
Goodbye Lanie Pope, hello Donna Reed.
North Carolina Ahead of the Curve
It might be hard to believe right now, but we here in North Carolina might be leading indicators for the US economy. Just as we started feeling the brunt of the recession before most of the rest of the country we might also be the first to feel the 'bottom' and see a recovery. This occurred to me when I read that foreclosures in February were down almost 50% compared to February of last year in North Carolina, but the rest of the country experienced a 30% increase in foreclosures. Yeah, yeah this is just one indicator and it's surrounded by other negative stories like the sales of existing homes in Greensboro falling 38% in February, but since foreclosures were a key factor in the start of our economic collapse it would seem that a decline in foreclosures would be a good sign that the bottom might be near.
Followed by a Foxx
My Blackberry beeped. I looked at it. The message from Twitter: "Virginia Foxx (virginiafoxx) is now following your updates on Twitter." As much as I've written about disagreeing with my Congresswoman I have to say that I'm flattered that she'd bother to follow me. If I was in her shoes I'd have completely ignored me. Welcome Congresswoman Foxx, and whether or not we agree on anything I'm glad to know you're listening. Now about that stimulus bill…
Great Ways to See the ACC Tourney
If you don't feel like watching the ACC tournament while nibbling on stale potato chips I have two recommendations for you. First is seeing the game at the new Deacon Tower Grille which Esbee highlights over at Life in Forsyth. Sounds way cool. Second is to go by Unity Moravian on Saturday and partake of some fresh BBQ. The doors open at 4:00 and close at 7:30. The games probably won't be on in the dining area, but there's carry out and you can watch the games from the confines of your own couch while horsing down the best BBQ in Forsyth County (personal opinion). BTW, my oldest son and I will once again be chopping pork for the BBQ at Unity so come on by and say hi.
Commuting
Today was my first official day in the TAA office. My first two days on the job were spent in DC at a conference so today I made the drive to the office for the first time that wasn't for an interview of some sort or another. I live in Lewisville and the office is in Greensboro off of Wendover Avenue and the distance is almost exactly the distance I used to commute to work in DC. Here's the big difference: it takes me about 35 minutes door-to-door here and on a good day it took 90 minutes in DC and on a bad day it could take as long as three hours.
Lingonberry Soda It Is
Yesterday when I posted my tips for shopping at Ikea I mentioned that one of the great things the store offers is a restaurant with good, affordable food and a soda with some exotic fruit that I couldn't name. Laura left a comment saying she thought it was lingonberry soda and 'lo and behold she was right. Esbee ventured down to the store in Charlotte today and had a meal and a lingonberry soda and she posted a picture just to make the rest of us jealous.
Newest Investment Scam Has Piedmont Ties
The newest investment scam, the alleged $8 billion fraud perpetrated by a Texas billionaire named Allen Stanford who had himself knighted in Antigua, has ties to the Piedmont Triad. In 2007 the operation opened a Greensboro office that was run by eight executives from US Trust Co. who were charged with targeting wealthy investors.
In July 2007, the company hired a team of eight executives from U.S. Trust Co. to work out of Greensboro, North Carolina, where the firm’s private-client group planned to target wealthy investors, according to statement at the time. The team was made up of John Rich, Glenda Burkett, M. Jo Brooks, Ken Dimock, Anthony Monforton, Virginia Saslow and William “Wes” Watson and Suzanne Wilcox.
Ikea Tricks
Today Ikea opened their first store here in North Carolina, home of the furniture mart. It's probably a sign of the times that the Lego of the furniture industry is opening a store here in the capital of the US furniture industry to great fanfare.
- The food in the cafeteria is pretty good and pretty cheap. We used to pig out on the meatballs and they had some kind of crazy fruit soft drink that we all loved. I think it was something like pomegranate, but whatever it was it was very light and un-syrupy.
- If the store in Charlotte has a children's play area that allows you to sign your kids in for a 1/2 hour of supervised play time while you shop then you should definitely take advantage of it. But be forewarned that within a week you're definitely going to be dealing with some strange illness that involves a lot of snot flowing from your child's nose. Personally I always found it to be a fair trade.
- If you buy any furniture that requires assembly, and I think that is all the furniture that Ikea sells, then you need to familiarize yourself with the metric system and odd looking tools that look like something out of a toddlers play tool set. You also need to set aside triple the time you think it should take to assemble the furniture.
- Don't go if you don't like primary colors. Ikea's big on primary colors.
- Finally, just because it's Ikea doesn't mean the other customers will behave any better than they do in other stores. In fact in Ikea most people tend to get lost which means they act even worse than usual, so paste on the happy face and just roll with it. If it helps just imagine yourself at the DMV before you enter which should get you in just about the right state of mind.
Enjoy your shopping experience!
