Friday Night in Floyd, VA

Took the family up to my mom’s place in Radford, VA to spend a long weekend with her, her beau Bert and my brother and his family.  On Friday night we went to Floyd, VA to see the bluegrass and gospel groups that play every Friday night at the General Store, along with some impromptu playing on the streets by various groups.  It’s a completely different world and culture and it was a definite eye opener for the kids (of all ages).  Here’s a little video I shot with my camera phone (date: 7/28/06):

XM Rolling Out a Way-Cool Feature

The new wave of XM Radios coming on the market offer MP3 recording capability which is cool because it allows you to record your favorite XM stations and then listen to them on the road, while working out, etc. Now they’re going one step better: they are adding a button that when pressed "bookmarks" a song that you like and the next time the radio is connected to your computer it will automatically buy and download the song via Napster.

This is the kind of concept I can see working for a lot of online companies down the road and not just from XM, but since XM is doing this already let’s extend that thought process.  Say XM starts a "Great Authors" channel and they have interviews and book readings with authors and they enable you to buy the book through Amazon with one click of a button.  Pretty cool huh?  Same concept could work for advertisers (some XM stations do have advertising), but that probably makes too much sense for most advertising agencies.

Is This Retro, Cheap or Just Sad?

XmturntableI’ve had my XM Delphi Radio Roady2 for about 8 months and until now I’ve kept it in the car.  A while ago Celeste got me the home kit for it, but I just now got around to putting it together in my office.  It plugs into any stereo with standard white/red auxilary cords, so instead of going out and getting a new setup I just grabbed an old hand-me-down stereo that my sister-in-law gave my kids years ago (see the picture; click on it if you want a larger version).  How old is it?  It has a turntable.  I guess you could say it’s an XMtable.

What the hell; the speakers work and now I have XM for my own version of Muzak.  The handy-dandy remote allows me to channel surf without leaving the computer.  Nice.

Brat Pack Rocks

Last Saturday Celeste and I went to Greensboro to see my cousin’s band, The Brat Pack, play at The Clubhouse.  They are a cover band doing a lot of 70s, 80s and some 90s stuff all of which is very "dance-able."  Which of course means that they attract lots of women who dance and lots of guys who watch them dance.

My cousin, Jeff James, plays bass (very well I might add) and the whole band does a great job.  If you’re looking for a good night out here’s a schedule of their upcoming gigs:
